What’s a New York specific problem that no one warns you about before you move here?

Everyone talks about rent and roaches and the subway smell. But no one told me about the sheer volume of scaffolding that just never comes down. I’ve lived on the same block for three years and the same tubes have been up the entire time. No visible construction. Just eternal gloom. Also the way people

A Brooklyn hookah lounge wanted me to work 3 busy weekend shifts for FREE before maybe hiring me💀

Just got offered a “job opportunity” at a karaoke hookah lounge in Brooklyn where they want me to work THREE full weekend shifts for free as a “trial” before deciding if they even want to hire me 😭😭💀 Not shadowing. Gao Xiao Pa’s $6 rou jia mo (“Chinese burger”) cooked using a vertical rotisserie like in al pastor and shawarma (Flushing, Queens)

Gao Xiao Pa – Google Maps This is a more unique take on rou jia mo with stacked marinated chicken thigh cooked on a vertical rotisserie. They even have pineapple on top of the spit like al pastor would. Think you can get a slice of pineapple with your rou jia mo if you ask.

They also sell an assortment of imported Japanese pantry goods and snacks like ramen, curry blocks, staple condiments, chocolate bars, and canned

I priced the same groceries at 12 NYC stores. The difference is kinda insane

I spent some time pricing out the same staples across stores in different neighborhoods. The gaps are genuinely wild, but not in the way you’d expect. Here’s what a dozen eggs costs right now: – H-Mart (Amsterdam Ave): $9.99 – Pioneer Supermarket (Columbus Ave): $9.99 – Whole Foods (UWS): $7.99 – Key Food (Amsterdam): $6.79
