I (21F) was hesitant to post this, but I’m not sure what else to do. I just finished my undergrad 8 days ago (woohooo) and was accepted into John Jay’s graduate program. I moved straight to NYC after my final exam. A family friend offered me a temporary place to stay in Manhattan until September. I used the last of my money to relocate and buy groceries, I have $100 to my name. Today, I was told I would need to pay $300/week to stay. I did not know there was a cost associated with staying here. Last week, when she asked if I could do $300/week, I explained that I couldn’t because I didn’t have a job in NYC yet, which she said “ok” to. After reiterating that today, I was told that I wasn’t ready for New York and that I shouldn’t be here. 🙂
I’ve been applying to jobs (which is a job in itself) and finally landed an interview tomorrow, but I’m debating even going since I have to be moved out by Wednesday. I was so proud of myself for making this move independently, getting accepted into grad school (which starts in 3 weeks), and finally getting an interview. Now I’m facing homelessness as a girl FRESH out of college. I genuinely don’t know what my next step is right now. I just feel so defeated and embarrassed. I’m literally about to be homeless, unreal. Any and all advice is appreciated.
EDIT: I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the time to comment, offer advice, send words of encouragement, and point me toward resources. I genuinely wasn’t expecting so many people to care enough to comment. NYC has endless resources which I’m becoming aware of, so thank you for that. I saw a few think pieces saying this was a cash grab, it’s not, I don’t want money lol, just words of wisdom, which many of you gave. 🤎
