I’ve been living in NYC for about 6 years now. I’m a transplant, not an OG New Yorker, and one thing I’ve noticed is that every few years I feel like I have to make a whole new group of friends.
People I get close to eventually leave, some move to the West Coast, some move to Jersey, some move closer to family, some just get priced out or tired of the city. And then suddenly the friend group I spent years building feels scattered.
I love the city and I don’t really want to leave, but it can feel exhausting to keep starting over socially. It’s not that I don’t meet people, but deeper friendships take time, and by the time things feel stable, life changes again.
For people who’ve been here long term, is this just part of NYC life? How do you deal with constantly rebuilding your social circle?
PS: used AI to phrase it better.
