I work in Union Square on the top floor of a high-rise office building. My company’s floor is split between two buildings (e.g. 234 and 238). This morning I took the elevator up in the 234 lobby. When I was leaving a little while ago, however, I decided to take the elevator in building 238, mostly because it’s right beside my desk.
I walk to the elevator, press the call button several times, but it won’t call the elevator. I assumed that maintenance had shut off the elevators temporarily or that my specific floor is turned off for some reason, so I decided to take the stairs. I walked down 15 flights of stairs to get to the bottom, only to realize that the first floor exit into the lobby was completely blocked off with a giant piece of plywood.
I got confused, thinking I may have walked down to the basement level, so I walked back up to the 2nd floor and tried the door, but it was locked, just like every other floor.
At this point, I realize they must be doing construction in this building’s lobby and that some jackass construction worker thought it would be acceptable to block an exit. So I angrily shove the plywood through the doorway, make my way to the front door, unlock it, and leave.
I was beyond pissed. Partially angry because there is NO WAY that doesn’t violate the NYC fire code. Secondly, I got white dust ALL over my clothes and backpack.
To clarify, there was no notice posted on my office’s side of the stairwell door, so I had no way of knowing that construction was actively happening.
Am I an asshole for knocking down the “door” and walking out leaving the lobby unlocked?
