Is it really that surprising that people aren’t drinking out as much anymore given the preposterous cost of drinks nowadays? I love cocktails and much to the detriment of my wallet will often hit up specialty cocktail bars, and fork up the $25/drink (incl. tip/tax). I wish they were cheaper but it is what it is.
How are mid-tier restaurants justifying this though? Maybe it’s not $25 but it’s definitely at least $20 in Manhattan and maybe 1$ or $2 cheaper in the other boroughs. This is an anomaly but recently went to Marea and the CHEAPEST cocktail was $32! I was actually floored. The hostess asked us like three times if we wanted a drink, and kept bringing up the fact that they have non-alcoholic options as if that were the issue.
Anyways – I’m curious to hear from people in the industry on this topic. I get that times are tough and margins slim and I truly want to support so many of the amazing restaurants out there but I feel like there’s a tipping point beyond which people will just stop ordering drinks or just stick to a single drink?
