The Art and Design Gallery at the Fashion Institute of Technology opens its next exhibition on November 12, a group show built around one subject: color.
About the Exhibition
PICTURING COLOR: Artists Reveal the Spectrum is an exploration of the many ways color shows up in art and design. The show follows the gallery’s earlier PICTURING SPACE (2019) and PICTURING LIGHT (2024), and it continues the same format of bringing different kinds of practitioners into conversation around a single idea.
The curatorial premise is that color speaks to us on an emotional level, hitting us before we even know what we are looking at. The human eye experiences color in varying ways, color can spark physical and emotional responses and alter mood, and its meaning changes from one cultural context to another. The exhibition brings together fine artists, photographers, graphic designers, and textile designers who each respond to color in their own way.

About the Art and Design Gallery
The gallery showcases the work of FIT students, faculty, and alumni alongside invited guest artists, and its exhibitions typically pair professional artists with the FIT community. Its recent programming includes Adorned Futures: Fabric, Form, and Indigenous Resistance earlier this year and Soil to Surface, which closed November 1.
Planning Your Visit
Pair it with a Chelsea gallery crawl. The gallery sits at the southern edge of Chelsea’s gallery district, so it works as a stop before or after the West 20s galleries.
Look for the Museum at FIT next door. The Museum at FIT is on the same campus, and its Doll Dressingexhibition runs September 16, 2026 – January 3, 2027.
Check for events. Opening reception and public program details were not available when this post was written, so check the gallery site or FIT’s events calendar at events.fitnyc.edu before you go.
