the29.art Opens Added Values + / a generous landscape at PS122 Gallery in the East Village, Running Through October 31
PS122 Gallery presents Added Values + / a generous landscape, an exhibition by the29.art, an intergenerational collective of self-identified women artists working across painting, photography, sculpture, film, performance, installation, and immersive media. On view October 8 through October 31, 2026, at 150 1st Avenue (entrance on 9th Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue A) in the East Village, the show opens with a reception on Thursday, October 8, from 6 to 8 PM. Selected through PS122 Gallery’s Annual Open Call, the exhibition proposes that artistic practice can be an act of regeneration — for communities, for culture, and for the environment.
Added Values foregrounds practices that transform materials, spaces, and systems, where creative interventions become additive rather than extractive. Liz Canner’s interactive VR work The Lost City of Mer resurfaces an underwater civilization through newly discovered artifacts, prompting viewers to reconsider their relationship to the ocean and participate in a de-extinction project. Stefani Mar’s Urban Rubble Garden transformed a vacant city lot into a zen garden using elements of the building that once stood there. Susan Salinger’s Herm 5 and Herm 6, clay sculptures reimagining ancient Greco-Roman herms as female-form guardians of Lower Manhattan, are part of an ongoing series. Kathy Brew’s Following the Thread photo series documents ancestral weaving practices in Cusco as a metaphor for continuity and resistance. Aline Mare’s The Hole at Glendale Narrows meditates on the terrible beauty of environmental collapse, and Martha Edelheit’s Slaughtered USA bears witness to violence. A robust performance program runs throughout October, with Yoshiko Chuma and The School of Hard Knocks presenting recurring FLASH! five-minute performances, alongside events by jennifer jazz, Phoebe Legere, Felice Rosser, Yohanna M. Roa, Susan Salinger, and Lila Zemborain.
the29.art was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic by artist Susan Salinger as an invitation-only collective and art experiment — modeled in part on the power networks Salinger encountered as a teenager in a Freemason handbook found on a sidewalk in 1975. The collective takes its name from the number of participants as of March 13, 2023, and operates on the premise that women in the arts must build their own structures of access and visibility. PS122 Gallery, one of New York’s longest-running artist-run nonprofits, gave first exhibitions to Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger, Kiki Smith, and Nan Goldin, among others, and remains a central resource for emerging and under-recognized artists in the city.
In asking whether art can give back more than it takes, Added Values + / a generous landscape arrives at a quietly radical answer: that generosity is rebellion, and care is revolution.
