I was born in October 2001, so I obviously don’t remember 9/11 or the days immediately afterward. A lot of my family was here and experienced it firsthand, but whenever I ask them about the day after, their memories are kind of a blur because they were in shock.
I’ve always been curious about what September 12, 2001 actually felt like in New York.
Was the city eerily quiet? Were the streets mostly empty?
Did people stay inside because they were scared, or were people out trying to get back to some sense of normalcy?
What were the trains like? Were the subways running the next day, especially outside of Lower Manhattan? If they weren’t, when did they start running normally again? What was public transportation like in general? And what about everyday things? Were stores open? Were people going to work? Were restaurants open? Did people still go out and see friends or family? Were there people trying to make little moments of normalcy or even joy despite everything that had happened?
If you were living in NYC at the time, what do you remember about the day after 9/11? Even little mundane details would be interesting to me. What did you see, hear, smell, notice, or do that day?
