I’ve been here almost two years and I swear every time I mention rent or groceries to people who’ve been here longer, they look at me like I’m being dramatic. What got me thinking about this was my two friends who moved here 8 years ago the way they talk about their early NY days sounds like a completely different city, cheaper sure but also just looser like there was more room to breathe and figure things out without every single month feeling like a math problem you might fail. They’d show me photos from apartments in Bushwick they were splitting for $900 each and talk about going out without really tracking what they were spending and I cannot comprehend that version of this place.
Their New York and my New York share the same subway lines and that’s kind of where the overlap ends. I was on my phone the other night playing sidepot us then jumped to scrolling at midnight just torturing myself looking at listings and it hit me that my entire sense of what’s normal here got recalibrated before I even had a chance to form my own baseline. I’m not complaining as I chose to move here and I’m not going anywhere, it’s more that I showed up after some invisible door closed and now I’m standing outside a shared experience that people around me lived through.
