I don’t order bánh mì often because I grew up on them and hate when it’s not done right. This is in addition to the gentrification of the buzz word “bánh mì” (I’ve seen a Korean style bbq pork belly on a ciabatta banh mi served with fries).
So I did some research and went to the highly rated and influencer heavy Bánh Mì Cô Út because I saw good things coming from Kitchen Cô Út. God that bread was awful. It was dry through out and the crust crumbled when I tried to pat it down to fit in my mouth. It tore up the roof of my mouth. Apparently they make the bread daily and the owner of Kitchen Cô Út makes it sound like they’re making something revolutionary. That’s not what I got. I liked the mayo and pâté but the crackling pork could’ve used some more flavor too. I don’t know if I caught them on an off day but the pictures seem to be 50/50 of hard interior bread and soft interior bread.
So where can I find a proper bánh mì at? I plan to try Bánh Mì Saigon and Saigon Vietnamese Deli. I also live by Bánh Mì Place and Bánhmì-Pro in Brooklyn.
Note:
I ask Asians because us Asians tend to have grown up eating food from a variety of other Asian cultures. The Asian American community is very strong because we’ve often been othered throughout life so we support each other because there is strength in numbers. Vietnamese cuisine and bánh mì are very popular so most Asians have tried it before. I don’t ask just the Vietnamese because people from Saigon like me, can be Chinese living in Vietnam.
Update #1:
I went Ba Xuyên on the suggestion of many users! I got combination #1 (ham, head cheese, pork roll, pork teriyaki & B.B.Q. w/ pâté & butter). It was $8 cash only.
The bread was noticeably fantastic. It had a beautiful crisp crackling crust with a lovely soft interior that still maintained its structure. The ratio of meat to veggies was very good but it could’ve used more pâté. I ordered it
“very spicy” but it was mild at best.
Overall 9/10. The components were good but it needed an extra boost of flavor to be perfect. Simply more pâté and some maggi would’ve made it a perfect sandwich. For my personal spice level, some jalapeño slices would’ve been a nice touch. The quality of the bread made for great first bite.
