Not sure if it’s the exact location, sort of an odd corner near Hudson Yards, lack of marketing or something else, but a mostly empty room on a Sunday night. Surprising considering it’s the latest from Erik Ramirez from the (I thought) well respected Llama Group, and especially surprising considering how strong this meal was. Much better than our meal in Llama Inn years ago.
Miso Black Cod – Expertly cooked delicate Cod on Nori flavored Polenta. Subtle flavors and while excellent forgettable compared to everything else. Still I’d order again.
Eel Pizza – Salty, sweet, nicely balanced with the eel, shitake, pecorino, bonito flakes and tangy sauce. Probably the most hyped dish here, and rightfully so, except that other dishes were equally as good if not better.
Udon Noodles – Another signature marketed as a play on Cacio e Pepe. This was just sensational. Complex, deep flavors with sautéed squid adding nice texture. If you like the chew on sautéed squid from say Blue Ribbon Sushi Columbus you’d like this.
Mussels – Almost didn’t order this because it was, well, mussels. Holy smokes this was good. Probably our favorite dish. Plump, gorgeous mussels in one of those addictive curry sauces with sweet heat from the Aji Amarillo. And comes with a surprise, perfect McDonald’s fries to dip in that sick sauce.
Wagyu Tri Tip – Exactly what you expect. Perfectly cooked, thinly sliced with a very complimentary Yuzu Bearnaise.
Tsukemodo Cucumbers side – refreshing bites to cut all that richness.
Good, creative drinks to boot. Striking space, fair prices for Manhattan. Go! Good option this month to pair with the holiday lights at Hudson Yards
