Hauser & Wirth’s first exhibition dedicated to the printmaking practice of British artist Catherine Goodman is titled Island. The show centers on The ULAE Series, a group of monotypes created during Goodman’s 2024 residency at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) on Long Island. The residency marked a turning point in her work, prompting a new visual vocabulary that carried back into her London studio and directly informed a new painting also included in the exhibition.
Goodman’s process at ULAE placed her within a lineage of artists—such as Grace Hartigan and Helen Frankenthaler—who deepened their practices through experimental printmaking. Working intuitively with copper plates, she built dense, expressive compositions that began with calligraphic gestures and evolved through iterative adjustments. Goodman frequently took works home in the evenings to rework with oil stick, creating an active dialogue between painting and print.
Throughout The ULAE Series, Goodman continues her longstanding oscillation between figuration and abstraction. Portraiture, a foundational element of her practice, remains embedded even in her most abstract marks. One monotype features the boy from Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood, an image that reflects the artist’s interest in memory, narrative, and cinematic tension. Across the series, Goodman describes each work as layered with the solitude, light, and introspection that shaped her time on Long Island.
Island situates this printmaking chapter within the broader arc of Goodman’s career—one defined by daily drawing, engagement with lived experience, and a deep commitment to education and social impact. The exhibition offers a focused look at how an immersive residency reshaped her approach to materials, gesture, and storytelling.
